as always uncanny x-force is top of the class, but the loki mini-series did come in at a close second. numbers 3-9 were all decent books. soldier zero and knight errant aren't the worst books i've ever read but at this point, with so many different titles on my pull list, i think it's time to drop them both. and maybe the venom / deadpool issue just went right over my head, but i didn't really find it very funny or entertaining at all, and it was easily the worst of the bunch last week.

as far as today's new stuff is concerned, it was another huge week. two somber, emotional releases start things off...

amazing spider-man #655 - COVER OF THE WEEK. this issue is probably one of the better comics i have ever had the privilege of reading. a perfectly executed piece of work. the art and writing (or sometimes the lack thereof) come together in just the right way to tell a moving and powerful story.

fantastic four #588 - like the above spidey issue, this one deals with the loss of a loved one and the impact it has on those involved. the first 4 pages are extremely emotional without a single word being used. as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and that is certainly the case with this book. in addition, the heart-to-heart exchange between spidey and franklin in the back-up story is excellent. great read all around.

first up are my rankings from last week's stack of new books...

1 - amazing spider-man #654
2 - starborn #3
3 - carnage #3

spidey and starborn were the easy choices for the top of the list. they were far better than the rest of the titles. that being said, all of the others were still quality books and depending on my mood, 3-8 could easily be reversed. in my eyes, that's a pretty good week.

as for today's pull, it was a big day - 12 books total. some awesome titles and a few that i'm giving one final chance to impress. here we go...

wolverine #6 - BEST. COVER. OF. ALL. TIME. haha that might be a little extreme, but there is no doubt in my mind that in the short time i've been purchasing comics, this is one of the best pieces of art i've seen. jae lee is superb. i need this one as a poster!

uncanny x-force #5 - new story arc for the best book out right now. great cover.

iron man rapture #4 - the final issue of what has been a fantastic mini-series.

venom / deadpool - what if?

amazing spider-man #654.1 - a prelude to the upcoming venom solo series

spider-girl #4

loki #3 - the third beautiful cover in this mini-series. the stories have been great too.

captain america: man out of time #4

darkwing duck #9

soldier zero #5 - last chance for this title. at the very least, it's sporting a sweet cover.

star wars: knight errant #5 - like soldier zero, this series has one last chance to win me over before it gets dropped.

and finally,
batman #707 - awesome action packed cover! i love batman.

i feel like trying out something new this week... before i post the books i came home with today, i'm going to rank all the stuff i picked up last wednesday (not including back-issues and trades). no long summaries or opinions, just a list of the prior weeks releases, starting with my favorite and going down to my least favorite...

last week was pretty tame, with none of the books really standing out as being far and away better than the others. although i can say with absolute certainty that the thor issue was easily the worst of the group. today's stack, however, looks to be pretty good at first glance...

carnage #3 - cover of the week! i'm loving this series. beautiful, beautiful art.

amazing spider-man #654 - another awesome, action packed spidey cover. the story's pretty exciting too.

wolverine #1000 - a super-sized wolvie issue with a kick-butt cover

batman and robin #20

starborn #3 (cover b) - cover is ugh. but the story continues to be amazing.

haunt #13 - as always with this series, another killer cover.

as usual the first week of the month is a little light but still some good stuff this time around...

daomu #1 - this one is wildly popular over in china and it's finally seeing a release stateside. the interior art is absolutely mesmerizing.

hellboy - the sleeping and the dead #2 - you can never go wrong with a new hellboy release!

daken - dark wolverine #5 - COVER OF THE WEEK! i'm really loving the uniqueness of this cover. totally different than anything else you'll see on the stands.

amazing spider-man #653 - spidey is such a fun read right now. big time has been very enjoyable so far.

spider-girl #3

thor for asgard #6 - final issue in this mini-series

superior #3 - this back issue finally came in so i'm officially caught up. wow. amazing, amazing book. can't believe i passed this series up when it first came out. so good.

and finally, this trade paperback came in from amazon this week and i can safely say that it's one of the single greatest things ever printed on paper. phenomenal. and straight from a 5 year old. i give you the pure awesomeness that is AXE COP! i will chop your head off!
